My 5 Funny Travel Pictures

Before Ian asked me to be a judge in his 5 Hilarious Travel Photos contest, I was planning on entering myself. But now I’m a judge, so I obviously can’t win. But when I take a look at the current entries, I realize that I could have never won in the first place! The other entries are hilarious!

All that said, I’m just going to post my pictures anyway. Here you go, my five funny travel pictures.

Friends Eating Dried Squid, Chinatown, Bangkok, Thailand

Imagine: you just arrived in Asia for the first time in your life, and you decide to go to Chinatown (of all places) and see what’s there. I don’t think I saw a “normal” food or beverage there! Endless where the stalls selling pig noses, dog tails, and furry fruits. Whole stalls devoted to selling dried squid! Like we’re going to eat that! Yeah, right! Six weeks later I had tried worse things (rice wine where monkey testicles were marinating in, for instance).

Bus Stuck in Mud, Laos

When on the road from Hanoi, Vietnam to Vientiane, Laos, the came across a bridge that had collapsed (lucky for us not while we were on the bridge). So we had to ford the river, but not before going through a whole bunch of mud first! The red bus was pretty darn stuck. Luckily we got across without further problems.

Zeno Holding Postcard, Poland

There was a day that I still traveled with my parents. The good-old-days. In any case, what we used to do is buy postcards and hold them in front the real thing. I don’t really know why I find this funny, but I realize now that it is a tradition possibly worth adopting for myself now that I travel solo. This one’s in Poland, where my dad is holding a picture of one of his thinker-heros.

Berrend Looks at Chicken, Klosters, Switzerland

One thing that’s great about living in Europe is that going skiing is never a problem. This year we went to Klosters in Switzerland and on of my college friend had his birthday, so we bought him a whole chicken for himself. Here he’s doubting if he’ll be able to finish it. He did.

Timen Holding Child, Middle-of-Nowhere, Vietnam

When traveling through Asia you’ll always hear things like that you’re tall or that you have funny hair, et cetera. But when I decided to travel to some towns that are not even mentioned in the travel guides (i.e. no tourist to be found), they were all in partial shock! For some of these kids it was the first time seeing a Westerner in real life. And they all wanted me to pick them up to my height (1.91 meters), while others took pictures with my DSLR. (It was okay to give people such equipment: the town was that small.)

great pics Timen. I really like that shot of your dad holding the picture in front of the real thing. Reminds me of a visual art project from University or something. Great tradition though…I may have to steal it next time I’m abroad….

I second adopting that tradition - very cool idea. I’m throwing my photographer’s hat in this ring shortly!

These are really cool pictures. The second one looks very familiar, brings up rainy-season-memories.

I like your dad’s idea about holding the postcard of the place you’re standing in front of up for the picture. If I can remember it, I certainly look forward to trying it in the future!
