My First Book: “A First Experience” Free Download
Posted Thursday, March 15th, 2007 · Permalink

Two months ago I started work on a book that would hopefully show in images some of the different experiences I had when traveling through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand in the summer of 2006. A few days ago my order arrived and it looks great! I never had such positive feedback before.
The book is a linen hardcover with 100 pages and around 500 of my photos. I have three copies (one for my mom’s birthday, one for showing people, and one for keeping long-term). I used Apple’s iPhoto and the MyPublisher plugin for the production.
I’ve decided to give the book away in PDF format. Considering the save-quality of the images and the fact that, including the cover, the book it 101 pages, it’s a large download: 70 megabytes. Do note that I own the entire copyright to the book and that nothing can be reproduced without my permission. The book’s copyright is in no way linked to the copyright notice in this site’s footer.
I really hope you enjoy it. It’s nowhere near as cool as the actual printed book, but it’s a start. I can recommend MyPublisher for this kind of stuff.
Download A First Experience (PDF, 70 megabytes)

Amazing images! And a great way for people who haven’t visited the region to see what it’s like.
Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant job! Thanks for offering your book. I love the layout and diverse collection of photographs. What kind of camera did you use? Any tips on composition?

It looks great. Good timing - after two and a half years of living in Vietnam I leave tomorrow to make a fresh start in Granada, Nicaragua.
If Nicaragua is half the experience that Vietnam has been I will count myself very lucky.
What an incredible country.

Thank you for your book.
From 1992-2001 I lived in: France->USA->South Africa->USA->Guatemala
There was one picture of a green farmside early in the book. Now that I am back in th states in the big city, I forgot how simple and beautiful life still is in many parts of the world.
The area covered in your book is one of my next travel goals so thanks for the motivation.
Great job, great book!

[…] During the summer of 2006, Swijtink spent 10 weeks “experience traveling” through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Over the past 2 months, he’s been sorting through the 6000 photos he took and assembling them into a book. Unfortunately, he only printed 3 copies of the book — one for his mom; one for showing people; and one for posterity. For the rest of us, Swijtink has made his book available for free in PDF format. Hi,
would love to download your book, but unf there seems to be a problem…!
It only gets a little way into the download and then stops…
Pity, cause the pics looked awesome!
Would love to see the whole book! If possible please send me a working link to my email ad!
Thanks!

i think your idea to print just for your self and give it free the digital edition for me is like a brilliant idea.
